Toyota Corolla Altis CNG Version This Year
TMT has confirmed that it will have a bi-fuel version of the 10th generation Corolla Altis by the end of 2008. The car will retain its regular E20 fuel system and tank, adding to it a CNG (compressed natural gas) system with a 70-litre tank in the boot. As with current Taxi conversions this will result in about 1/4 - 1/3 reduction in boot space.
The tank will also increase the weight of the vehicle by around 100 kg, and Toyota will replace the rear coils springs with stiffer coils from the Corolla wagon which is around the same weight as this CNG version.
Although this car is primarily targeting the local taxi market, it seems that there would be logic behind offing a regular consumer version also, and even exporting to other markets such as Singapore.
The CNG Altis will be using the 1.6 litre engine. The gas version of the 9th generation Corolla being used as taxis in Thailand is badged "Limo" and is quite a cut down version, sitting below the "J" base model in terms of specification. If the new CNG Altis is to attract customers from outside the taxi industry, it will really need to be offered with a higher trim level.
With the global oil price sitting well above $100 a barrel ($108 at time of writing), and showing no signs of dropping off, it makes sense for Thailand to make a move away from oil. Gas is the obvious choice given that Thailand has a local supply. Gasohol and E20 might be cheaper that regular petrol, but when gas is just 8.50 a kg, and LPG is THB 10.15 a litre compared to THB 28.59 for the much hyped E20, the price difference card doesn't really work in the favour of E20.

Frightened
Peter,
U frightened me there. I thought Toyota has suddenly decided to give DVVT-i engine to current Altis.
That make the people buying the new current Altis completely at a lost. Hahaha!
Let's hope they don't do that for a while!
I think it is pretty sure that Toyota will not bring the DVVT-i engines to the Malaysian/Thai market in the near future, so you can relax! :-)
When are you expecting delivery of your new car?
hi Peter!
Thanks for still remembering me. hehe!
my car already arrived in showroom. went and inspected it today. Everything looks great except the top glovebox lid is a bit out of alignment! maybe i am too particular, but will ask if the service center is willing to change for me. In thailand, have you come across people claiming parts for 'out of alignment' before?
can only take the car on monday though due to it's imported from thailand and roadtax will delay 1 day :(
You can never be too particular
The car should be perfect, if not, you are right to demand more. It would be good for you if you could get it sorted before you take the car out though, you might have a harder job getting something done after you already accept the car.
We had a Chevrolet Optra and the steering wheel was out of alignment by about 5-10 degrees!! Every time it went in for servicing we mentioned it and they never fixed it. Finally after 4 years they said... we can't do it, bring it to a company that does that sort of thing.
I do think that, in general, I find myself being more particular about things than most people around me here in Thailand, so I would guess that most people here would settle for a slight alignment issue. I'd demand a perfect car. You're paying a lot of money for it, and it's not a Proton!
yes you are right
yes you are right. this is not a proton ;)
i will go see other units in the showroom first. if the top glovebox all have a little mis-alignment, i will let it go. if only mine have that problem, i will demand service center to change for me. Thanks for advice Peter!
confirmed
I've taken my car. and also confirmed all other altises in the showroom have this marginal gap on the top glovebox. so altis in Thailand should also have this problem. so i have nothing to complain about :D
So, are you happy with it?
Give us the details!! :-) What spec did you get?
yes i am :)
although steering too light, but comfort is perfect and features are so practical.
for example, MID will show which door/boot is open where civic 1.8 dont have. parking sensor displays will show where is the obstacle. only lacking cruise control and auto rain sensor here :(
got myself 1.8G. highest spec here will be 1.8G sporty. its basically just add bodykit.
Glad to hear it!
Yeah, the steering is light, but you'll get used to it. The cruise control is the biggest omission from the Thai car, but they just don't want to cut into the Camry market I suppose. (Yet they have that in Thailand!)
yup!
the government here are money suckers! ur government even recommend E20 with tax exemption, here our petrol dont even meet EURO 4 standard, and max taxation for new cars!
hey. heard the new jazz is revealed in thailand. any post on it soon?
2008/2009 Jazz
Yes, I'll be having a look at the Jazz at the Bangkok International Motor Show. I hope to have some details, and at least get to play around with the car. So, I'll have something up by tomorrow evening (hopefully).
