Police Defend Red-Bull Heir
Submitted by peter on 5 April, 2013 - 12:59.On 3rd September, 2012 a tragic accident happened on Sukhumvit Road. When the story broke, I remember feeling sick to my stomach as I read the gruesome details of what took place. But now I feel even more sickened by the recent turn of events.
In September, 2012, Vorayuth Yoovidhya, driving a Ferrari, collided with a police motorbike killing the rider, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert, and dragging his body 200 metres along the road. When the police came to Mr Vorayuth's house to investigate, the suspect attempted to evade the police, and the house keeper lied to protect him. When he was caught, his driver then attempted to take the blame for the accident, filing a false report, for which he was later convicted. In the meantime, Mr Vorayuth was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
At the time it seemed clear that the 27-year-old Red Bull heir was guilty of speeding, drink-driving, and manslaughter. He has fled the scene of an accident, and attempted to evade the police while possibly asking various members of the household staff to lie for him. Seems like a open-and-shut case, right?
Well, no. Now that the dust has settled, and we can finally see the truth, it turns out that Vorayuth wasn't speeding. And he wasn't drunk, least not at the time he was driving. Actually, he wasn't really doing anything wrong apart from hit-and-run. Yep, that is what his defence team are now saying. Are they serious? They expect any of this to hold water given the way events unfolded on that tragic morning. Don't they care about justice for the family, friends of the policeman who was tragically killed in this mess. Well, you would think they would be the ones who would understand it best. You see, his defence team are the police!
That's right. The police are now jumping to the defence of Mr Vorayuth Yoovidhya. They have produced two expert witnesses who say that he wasn't speeding, and they say that while Vorayuth was over the limit when taken in at his house, he might have just gone home and had a few drinks after dragging a guy 200 meters down the road.
The maximum sentence is now 2 years, rather than the 10 years it would have been were he to be found guilty of the drink-driving and speeding charges. And we know from experience that the 2 year sentence will turn into a suspended sentence, and he will not go to jail.
Simple question: Why are the police doing this?
I think we all know the answer.
