Toyota Corolla American Details - Dual VVT-i

Just a quick update. It seems that we might be getting the same 1.8 litre engine as the US Corolla, and it might be Dual VVT-i After all?

I previously wrote about the Corolla Altis engine issue and at the time I thought that we were not getting Dual VVT-i units. This was an assumption based on some data in a Toyota presentation pack at a Toyota Dealer in Bangkok.

Now there is some new information which makes everything clearer, the launch detailed specifications of the US model Corolla.

According to this story the American Corolla features all-new engines, a 1.8-litre and a 2.4. It is the 1.8 litre unit that is of interest to us, since we won't be getting the 2.4!

So, the 1.8 in the US Corolla is producing 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm, and it is a Dual VVT-i unit! This 132 hp figure is the same figure I saw in the Thai booklet for our new Altis. However, since the Japanese 1.8 Altis with the Dual VVT-i had a power output of around 140 hp, and the current VVT-i Altis has 136 hp, I was inclined to think that this was not the Dual VVT-i version.

But now we know that there is a Dual VVT-i unit that is tuned to output 132 hp things are starting to look up! This should lead to better performance and economy despite the lower power output figures.

More details as we have them.

New Corolla Altis' 1.8 engine

The USDM Corolla's 132hp figure might be using the American SAE horspower rating.
Is there a chance the new ASEAN/Thai Corolla Altis is similar to the new taiwan Corolla Altis?

I checked the website of Toyota Taiwan and Toyota Japan, this is what I found...

New Corolla Altis 1.8
Engine: 1ZZ-FE VVTi
Displacement: 1794 cc
Power: 132 PS @ 6,000 rpm
Torque: 17.3 kg-m @ 4,200 rpm

New Corolla Axio 1.8
Engine: 2ZR-FE Dual VVTi
Displacement: 1797 cc
Power: 136 PS @ 6,000 rpm
Torque: 17.8 kg-m @ 4,400 rpm

That would mean the current engine stays!

Hi AM2,

Thanks for the info, yes, seems you've worked it out. I was pretty sure from what I saw in the marketing folder at the dealer here in Thailand that it was the same engine as the current model, and I got my hopes up when I saw that the US engine had the same power output.

But since the "New" Altis is using the 1ZZ-FE in the Taiwan market, then it is highly likely that is what we will get here in Thailand. The same 1ZZ-FE from the current model!

I'd love a new Altis, but this engine has been around for a long time!

Thanks again for the post. I guess we'll know for sure very soon.

Update:
Toyota previewed the new Corolla Altis in the Philippines last night, its a CBU(completely built unit) from Thailand.
Its powered by the same 1ZZ-FE (1.8) and 3ZZ-FE (1.6) VVTi engines found in the previous Corolla Altis.
I'm still waiting for the details...
